5 steps to a Schoolies week you won’t forget

Finishing school for good deserves some solid celebrations. With so much excitement to get caught up in, here’s some hot tips from our Trauma Service and Sexual Health team to stay safe and healthy. Your adult life starts now, so start it strong 💪

1. Listen to your gut.

This is the top tip from our Trauma Service nurses, who see the most traumatic injuries that come through Sunshine Coast University Hospital. They say many injuries are preventable and risk-taking is never worth it.

"If it doesn't feel right, just really have a good hard think about it before you do it, because the consequences could be life changing,” said Sunshine Coast Health Trauma Service Clinical Nurse Mel Procter.

2. Watch your alcohol intake

If you’re over 18 and planning on drinking, keep an eye on how many drinks you’ve had. You’ll make different decisions when you’ve had too many and you don’t want to take risks that leave you with regret. Drink two glasses of water for each alcoholic drink. You’ll thank yourself the next morning.

3. Don’t double on e-scooters

We get it, waiting around for a ride home isn’t a vibe. But e-scooters are a quick ticket to the ED if you’re not careful. Don’t ride after drinking, do your helmet up every time, and never double-up with a friend. The scooters don’t balance the same with two people and there’s usually only one helmet.

4. Stick with your friends

Listen up if you’re *that* friend who takes off on side missions on nights out. Schoolies is a time to celebrate with your mates, so stay together and keep an eye out for each other. That way if someone does find themselves needing help, there’ll always be someone to call for medical assistance. Oh, and on that note: charge your phone every day and invest in a power bank.

5. Consent, protection and contraception.

Embrace the awkward pre-Schoolies sex talk with your parents. Know how to access protection and contraception if sexual activity is on the cards. Pack condoms and any other contraception you use. Only take part in consensual sexual activity – make sure you consent and get consent from your partner every time. If needed, you can access a full range of STI screening at the Sunshine Coast Health Sexual Health Service at Caloundra, as well as contraceptive services.
