Sunshine Coast Health's Oral Health team are asking people to look after their teeth by being mindful of how they enjoy their Easter chocolate.

Dentist Lauren Pearson said people should limit the number of times they eat chocolate throughout the weekend, rather than regularly grazing on small treats.

"When you eat the chocolate it reduces the PH in your mouth, which makes your mouth more acidic, which makes you more susceptible to caries or dental decay," Lauren said.

"So just enjoy it maybe once or twice, rather than nibbling small amounts throughout the day."

Ms Pearson also warns agains brushing teeth straight after an Easter egg, and says a simple drink of water is best.

"Because chocolate lowers the PH in the mouth, making it more acidic, if you brush your teeth with that in your mouth still it can harm your teeth."

"You should always wait half an hour after eating to brush your teeth."

And of course the golden rule for dental health is as important as ever this weekend - everyone should always brush their teeth for two minutes, twice a day.
